Experience

Herb Van Der Veer is an Account Executive in Parker, Smith & Feek's Commercial Insurance Department. He is responsible for directing and managing select account teams to work with large businesses that have complex risk management issues and challenging insurance market placements.

With more than thirty years of experience in the insurance industry, Herb has focused his career on the insurance and risk management issues of larger business entities. He has firsthand experience in negotiating insurance overage terms, liability limits, alternative risk transfer programs and premiums with underwriters in the major insurance centers of the world. In addition to his work with traditional domestic and international markets, Herb is very experienced and skilled in alternative risk funding strategies using a variety of techniques that complement significant risk retention such as retrospective rating and dividend plans, deductibles and self-insured retentions, and even finite risk plans. He has been involved in virtually all aspects of single parent captive insurance companies from determining feasibility, selecting domiciles and service providers, and writing insurance or reinsurance contracts; but he has also been involved in assessing the benefits of group captives, rent a captives, and segregated cell captives. Herb holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) professional designation, and is a graduate of North Park University in Chicago, Illinois. He is active in the Washington Healthcare Risk Management Association and a member of the Seattle Rotary Club.
