Teeing up for Friends of the Children

Teeing Up With Friends of the Children

Friends of the Children – Portland has 45 Friends guiding, supporting, and mentoring over 400 children. They provide the most vulnerable children a nurturing and sustained relationship with a professional mentor who teaches positive values and sets attainable expectations for each child to become a healthy, productive member of the community. Through the organization, mentors are paired with kindergarteners who come from chaotic family backgrounds, are living in poverty, and are misbehaving or showing signs of falling behind in school. With the parents approval, these children are offered guidance to prevent them from dropping out of school or getting into trouble. The mentors stick with the kids unconditionally, providing twelve years of trusted, consistent support and help with growing up. Mentors spend four hours a week with each child in the classroom, in after-school activities, in peer-support groups, and take the kids on fun outings. This program has provided so many children with experiences and opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have the means to achieve on their own. The organization has been in the top ten for Oregon’s Most Admired Non-Profit’s for the past eleven years, and number one in 2015 and 2016.
