Experience

John is a Principal, Senior Vice President, and Account Executive in King & Neel’s Surety Department.

John specializes in working closely with a wide variety of contractors, suppliers, developers, and other businesses to maximize their ability to qualify for the surety bonds needed to enable their companies to thrive. He matches clients with bonding companies that fit the way they operate. Since the practices and personalities of bonding companies differ as widely as the businesses they support, one of his ongoing objectives is to develop and maintain strong relationships with an extensive array of surety companies. A key component of a successful bonding program involves the ability of a business to obtain quality guidance from several professionals, primarily accountants, attorneys, and bankers. John takes pride in cultivating relationships with these members of the business community in order to be a valuable resource.

John was born and raised in Honolulu and graduated with a finance degree from the University of Colorado. In 1976, he joined King & Neel as an in-house bond underwriter and developed his industry knowledge with mentoring from the agency’s founders, as well as educational opportunities offered by the surety and construction industries. Unlike many in the surety industry, John’s entire career has been with King & Neel.

King & Neel became a member of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers (NASBP) in 1973. John is active in NASBP, and after serving on the executive committee for three years was chosen as president for the 2019/2020 year. For more than 50 years, King & Neel has been dedicated to serving the insurance and bonding needs of the building industry, so they have been members of the Hawaii Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) – the General Contractors Association of Hawaii (GCA) – since 1968. John’s involvement on several GCA committees enables him to keep pace with local and national construction issues. On weekends, John focusses on family time with his wife, Susie, and their adult twins, as well as ocean-oriented activities like kayak surfing.
